My family genealogy takes me back to the Irish Free State in the 1800’s. The Irish Free State since has become Ireland and Northern Ireland. You will see through family trees that my ancestors on my parental and maternal sides came from County Cork and County Limerick what is now Ireland. An American by birth, I can claim that I am of full Irish decent.
The first generation of my Hannigan lineage takes me back to County of Limerick, Ireland to my great-great-grandfather Cornelius and his wife Mary Hannigan. As of this date, more of my effort in Ireland research is ongoing to collect documentation to identify the rest of the Cornelius Hannigan Irish Clan in County Limerick, Ireland.
The second generation is my great-grandfather Patrick Joseph Hannigan, son of Cornelius and Mary Hannigan, was born in 1840 in the County Limerick, Ireland. He immigrated to the United States in 1867 and was a resident of Morrisania, Westchester County, New York until his death on September 4, 1884 and he is interred in Saint Raymonds Cemetery in the Bronx, New York.
He married my great-great-grandmother, Catherine [Kate] O’Neill in 1867 in New York. My great-great-grandmother Catherine, daughter of James O’Neill and Bridget Murphy, was born in Ireland in August 1855 and passed away on November 3, 1925. She is interred next to Patrick in Saint Raymonds Cemetery in the Bronx, New York. As of this date, additional effort in Ireland research is ongoing to collect documentation for my great-great-grandmothers parental and maternal Irish families.
To this marriage, the following children were born and lived at 484 East 164th Street, Morrisania, New York. To the best of my knowledge, as of this date, this is the third generation of my Hannigan family.
Mary [May] Hannigan, the oldest child of Patrick and Catherine [Kate] Hannigan, was born in Morrisania, New York in July 1868 and passed away in Trenton New Jersey in 1954
Cornelius Hannigan, the next oldest child of Patrick and Catherine [Kate] Hannigan, was born in Morrisania, New York in October 1870 and passed away March 6, 1917. After the death of his father, Cornelius took over as head of the household and supported his mother until his death. Cornelius never married.
James Hannigan, the next oldest child of Patrick and Catherine [Kate] Hannigan, was born in Morrisania, New York in 1872 and passed way March 5, 1906 and is interred next to his father in Saint Raymonds Cemetery in the Bronx, New York. James never married.
Elizabeth Hannigan, the next oldest child of Patrick and Catherine [Kate] Hannigan, was born in Morrisania, New York in 1874 and passed away at the age of 17 on 5 December 1891 and is interred next to her father in Saint Raymond Cemetery, Bronx, New York.
Rosanna Hannigan, the next oldest child of Patrick and Catherine [Kate] Hannigan, was born in Morrisania, New York in 1877.
Note: This is all that my son John and I have for Rosanna. We have not been able to find any documents pertaining to Rosanna. Therefore, Rosanna is still an open issue until documents are located addressing her birth, marriage, and/or death.
John Joseph Hannigan [Senior], the next oldest child of Patrick and Catherine [Kate] Hannigan, was born in Morrisania, New York on June 8, 1890 and passed away on May 16, 1947 and is interred in Fairview Cemetery, Readville-Hyde Park, Massachusetts. This is my grandfather, and more will follow in the pages to come about him. It is now noted, that my grandfather is the only member of his family, that is not interred next his parents and family in Saint Raymonds Cemetery, Bronx, New York.
Denis Michael Hannigan, the youngest child of Patrick and Catherine [Kate] Hannigan, was born in Morrisania, New York in March 1883 and passed away on April 16, 1903 resulting from a railroad accident on the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad. Denis is interred next to his father, mother, and other family members in Saint Raymonds Cemetery, Bronx, New York.
Of the seven children born to Patrick Joseph and Catherine, nee O’Neill, Hannigan only three children married. These families became the fourth generation of my Hannigan family ancestry.
Mary [May] Hannigan was a nurse and married Wilbur Oliver. Current research through the Trenton Historical Society will provide additional information hopefully on the Oliver Family from Trenton, New Jersey. Will Oliver served in the First World War in France as a Lieutenant with the US Army Signal Corps, along side my grandfather John Joseph Hannigan, Senior. I do not know if Wilbur and Mary were married prior to Wilbur going in the U.S. Army during World War I or upon Wilbur’s returning to the United States and mustering out of the U.S. Army.
My grandfather, John Joseph Hannigan Senior married Julia Teresa Gillman of New York on September 3, 1906 in Bronx, New York. To this marriage, two children were born Dorothy [Dorothea] [Dolly] L. Hannigan, the oldest was born June 13, 1907 in the Bronx, New York. My father, John Joseph Hannigan Junior, the youngest, was born October 11, 1909 in the Bronx, New York. My grandmother passed away in 1937 and is interred in Saint Raymonds Cemetery, Bronx, New York with the other members of the Gillman Family.
My grandfather married Esther P. Stanford, his second wife, in 1938 in Quincy, Massachusetts [New Yokr??] Their marriage license is on file in either Boston or Quincy, Massachusetts. Esther P. nee Stanford, Hannigan was from Maine. Esther returned to Maine and I do not know when she passed, although I know that she is buried in her hometown in Maine.
Denis Michael Hannigan married Minnie Elizabeth Madaus on December 27, 1902 in the Bronx, New York. Minnie Elizabeth Madaus was born in 1894. As addressed earlier in this book, Denis passed way resulting from a railroad accident on the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad on April 16, 1903 at the age of 20. His widow, Minnie, at the age of 19, delivered a male child Raymond Hannigan born June 22, 1903. Their marriage license is on file in Bronx, New York.
My father, John Joseph Hannigan Junior, son of John Joseph Hannigan Senior and Julia Teresa, nee Gillman, Hannigan married Catherine Rita Donahue of Readville, Massachusetts on 16 June 1934. Their marriage license is on file in Boston, Massachusetts. This family became the fifth generation of the Hannigan family. My father employment was a railroad police office on the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad in the Readville and Boston, Massachusetts railroad yards. Later in his railroad career, he was an electrician and air conditioning maintenance man. My mother was a housewife. Catherine Rita Donahue was born on 20 October 1911. My mother came from a large Irish second generation O’Donoghoe family from County Cork, Ireland. To this marriage, a male child was born John Dennis Hannigan born April 19, 1935 in Boston, Massachusetts which started the sixth generation.
My father’s sister, Dorothy L. Hannigan, Daughter of John Joseph Hannigan Senior and Julia Teresa, nee Gillman, Hannigan married John Peterson in 1937 in Massachusetts. This branch is also the fifth generation of the Hannigan Family. To this marriage, a male child was born John Gary Peterson in 1939 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Their marriage license is on file in New Bedford, Massachusetts. John Gary was my first cousin and a sixth generation Hannigan.
John Dennis Hannigan – son of John Joseph Junior and Catherine Rita, nee Donahue, Hannigan – first marriage to Joanne NMI Clark on August 5 1955 in Washington, D.C. this started the seventh generation of the Hannigan Family. Our marriage license is on file in Washington, D.C. Joanne was born on April 10, 1935 in Brasher, Missouri. Four children were born to this family. Joanne Clark passed away on December 12, 1963 in Alexandria, Virginia. She is interred at the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. Her death certificate is on file with the State of Virginia.
John Clark Hannigan, the oldest son of John Dennis and Joanne NMI, nee Clark Hannigan was born on 14 June 1956 at the U.S. Army Hospital, Fort Devens, Massachusetts. His birth certificate is on file with the Town Hall in Shirley, Massachusetts. He is named after his grandfathers, John Joseph Hannigan Junior and Roy William Clark.
Catherine Mae Hannigan, the oldest daughter of John Dennis and Joanne NMI, nee Clark, Hannigan, was born on July 23, 1957 at the U.S. Army Hospital, Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. Her birth certificate is on file in the town of Eatontown, New Jersey. She is named after her grandmothers, Catherine Rita nee Donahue Hannigan and Mae A. nee Ratliff, Clark.
David Brian Hannigan, the youngest son of John Dennis Hannigan and Joanne NMI, nee Clark, Hannigan, was born on February 5, 1960 at the U.S. Army Hospital, Kagnew Station, Asmara, Eritrea, and Ethiopia. His birth certificate issued by the American Consulate, in Asmara and on file at the State Department, Washington, D.C. David had dual citizenship the Empire of Ethiopia and United States. David is named after his mother’s brother and only uncle David Clark.
Debra Jo Hannigan, the youngest daughter of John Dennis and Joanne NMI, nee Clark, Hannigan, was born on August 31, 1962 1960 at the U.S. Army Hospital, Kagnew Station, Asmara, Eritrea, and Ethiopia. Her birth certificate issued by the American Consulate, in Asmara and on file at the State Department, Washington, D.C. Debra Jo had dual citizenship the Empire of Ethiopia and United States. Debra Jo is named after her mother Joanne (Jo), nee Clark, Hannigan.
John Dennis Hannigan – son of John Joseph Junior and Catherine Rita, nee Donahue, Hannigan second marriage to Jo Ann Hansen on Friday, December 13, 1964 in Alexandria, Virginia this continued the sixth generation of the Hannigan Family. Their marriage license is on file in Alexandria, Virginia. Jo Ann was born on June 7, 1936 in Paullina, Iowa. One child was born to this family.
Denice Michelle Hannigan, a daughter, was born on December 14, 1965 in Washington, D.C. Her birth certificate is on file in Washington, D.C.
Jo brought a son, David Anthony Martin, an only child, born on February 17, 1962 in Washington, D.C. to this marriage. His birth certificate is on file in Washington, D.C. Jo was a divorced mother. February 1965 at age three years old, I adopted David Anthony Martin in Arlington, Virginia and his name was change to David Anthony Hannigan. This marriage ended in divorce on February 14, 1978 after long dissertations over settlement agreements. Our divorce agreement is on file with the City of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
John Dennis Hannigan – son of John Joseph Junior and Catherine Rita, nee Donahue, Hannigan third marriage to Karen Sue Stanberry daughter of Orrin and Evalyn, nee Longerbone, Stanberry on Saturday, December 2, 1978 in Fort Wayne, Indiana and continues the sixth generation of the Hannigan Family. Karen was born on August 31, 1953 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Her birth certificate and our marriage license are on file with the City of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Two children were born to this family.
Stacey Nicole Hannigan, the oldest daughter of John Dennis and Karen Sue, nee Stanberry, Hannigan was born May 1, 1980 in Arlington Height, Illinois. Her birth certificate is on file in the town of Arlington, Heights, Illinois.
Stacey Nicole Hannigan, daughter of John Dennis and Karen Sue, nee Stanberry, Hannigan married Shawn Nave the son of Robert and Debra, nee, Nave of Roanoke, Indiana on 2000 and continues the seventh generation of the Hannigan family.
